Eddy Street Commons Opens for Business
Notre Dame has never had a real “college town”—an area of shops and restaurants to which students can walk easily. But that has changed with the recent opening of the Eddy Street Commons. Thanks to collaboration between Kite Realty, Notre Dame, and the City of South Bend, the Commons opened this fall and will unfold to completion over the next two years. [Full Story]

Alumni Association Honors Outstanding Alumni
During halftime of the Notre Dame-Navy football game on Saturday, Nov. 7, Brig. Gen. Michael M. Brogan ’80 will receive the Rev. William Corby, C.S.C.
Award for distinguished military service, and Ronald W. Zamber, M.D. ’83 will receive the Harvey G. Foster Award for his distinguished involvement in civic initiatives—especially those involving children.

Board of Trustees Elects Father Jenkins to Second Term
The University’s Board of Trustees elected Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., to a second five-year term as president of Notre Dame, effective at the conclusion of his first term, June 30, 2010. “The vision and leadership that Father Jenkins has demonstrated in his first four years in office have been inspiring and innovative,” said Richard C. Notebaert, chairman of the University Board of Trustees. “Building upon the foundation set by his Holy Cross predecessors, he is making the aspirations of this University a reality. The Fellows and Trustees look forward to continuing our work with him in service to Our Lady’s University.” [Full Story]

Braille Coin to be Used for ND-Navy Coin Toss
A 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar will be used in the official coin toss for the Notre Dame-Navy football game on Saturday, Nov. 7. Marc Maurer ’74, president of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), will bring the coin to campus personally. Maurer is the Alumni Association’s 2009 Rev. John Cavanaugh, C.S.C. Award winner for his exemplary model of character and his outstanding contributions in the field of public service. [Full Story]

Ryan Hall: History in the Making
Ryan Hall, the new women’s residence hall located north of the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, and south of Welsh Family Hall, welcomed its first residents in August (view the video). The multi-story residence hall is approximately 74,000 gross square feet with 123 rooms and 248 beds. Learn more about Ryan Hall.

Innovative Park at Notre Dame Officially Opens
ND Students and faculty will work together transform innovations into viable marketplace ventures, thanks to the new Innovation Park at Notre Dame. A grand opening celebration for the research park took place Oct. 23 at the park’s first building, which is located at 1400 E. Angela Boulevard (learn more by watching this video).

Whenever attending sporting events or interacting with current or prospective Notre Dame student-athletes, fans of the Fighting Irish should remember that they are required to follow important NCAA guidelines. Read the October issue of the Irish Interpreter to review the most recent version of the NCAA compliance guidelines from the Notre Dame Athletic Department. The current issue includes a “booster briefing” with some frequently asked questions, updates on NCAA violations at other schools, and a “test your knowledge” segment about NCAA regulations.

ND Ranks High in Athletics and Academics
Notre Dame ranks among the top five NCAA Division I institutions in the country in combining athletic and academic achievement, according to the annual rankings released Oct. 5 by the National Collegiate Scouting Association in Chicago. Notre Dame ranked fourth (in a tie with Harvard University) among NCAA Division I universities and 12th overall in the annual NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings, trailing only Stanford University, Princeton University, and Duke University in the Division I standings. ND Alumni Directory Update
Thank you to all who participated in the 2010 Alumni Directory. Because of the tremendous response from alumni, we were able to update and verify thousands of alumni records, including locating a number of lost alumni.
Available exclusively to Notre Dame alumni, the directory will include the most up-to-date information available on the more than 123,000 alumni. The front of the directory will include a beautiful, full-color, 20-page introduction that covers University history, Alumni Association initiatives, and interesting Notre Dame trivia.
The Alumni Association is finalizing the publication of the book, and will begin delivery in late November.

Read Me, I’m Irish

Last spring, the Alumni Association launched an initiative called ND Women Connect (view the video). Service Project Planned for Washington State Game
When Notre Dame takes on
Washington State in San Antonio this Halloween, the NDAA will collaborate with the ND Club of San Antonio for a special service project to benefit the Healy-Murphy Center, an alternative school in San Antonio. The project will involve painting the Healy-Murphy Center’s cafeteria on the morning of the ND-Washington State game. [Full Story]
