NDAA Honors Outstanding Alumnus
During halftime of the Notre Dame-Washington State game Oct. 31, the Alumni Association presented the Distinguished Alumnus award to Maj. Gen. Frederick Roggero ’76, U.S. Air Force chief of safety. (View the video that was played during the presentation.) Commander of the Air Force Safety Center, Roggero develops, executes, and evaluates all aviation, ground, weapons, space and system mishap prevention, and nuclear surety programs to preserve combat readiness. He also manages, develops, and directs all Air Force safety and operational risk management education courses. [Full Story]

Alumna Elected to Pennsylvania Supreme Court
Superior Court Judge Joan Orie Melvin ’78 of Pittsburgh, was elected Nov. 3 to a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Orie Melvin, a Republican, defeated her superior court colleague, Democrat Jack Panella, with 53 percent of the vote. [Full Story]

Dates for Second Annual Sports Weekend Announced
Last January, the Alumni Association welcomed ND alumni and their families back to campus for the first Alumni Sports Weekend. More than 400 guests visited campus to cheer the Irish hockey team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams to victory in the Joyce Center. Addressing Healthcare in Honduras
On Friday, Nov. 13, listen to Dr. Peter Daly ’82 discuss his efforts to address global health improvement in Honduras, the most impoverished nation in Central America.
This spring, Daly and his wife, Lulu, established a Holy Family Surgery Center in rural Honduras. Their vision is to have a self-sustaining, Honduran-based ambulatory surgery center staffed by Honduran physicians, using and maintaining state-of-art equipment, with volunteers serving a supportive and collaborative role (learn more). The lecture will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Geddes Hall.

Alumnus Elected Governor of Virginia
Former Virginia Attorney General and Notre Dame alumnus Bob McDonnell ’76 was elected governor of his state in an off-year election Nov. 3. McDonnell, who majored in business management at Notre Dame, defeated Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds, 59 percent to 41 percent. [Full Story]

Engineering Welcomes New Associate Dean
As the College of Engineering prepares to open the new Stinson-Remick Hall, it welcomes Dr. M. Brian Blake, an accomplished leader at Georgetown University, to its faculty as associate dean for strategic initiatives and professor of computer science and engineering. After spending most of his career as a researcher and administrator on “The Hilltop,” Blake recognizes that coming to Notre Dame has allowed him to pursue new challenges as a researcher and educator. Introducing the 2009 Christmas Ornament
The 2009 Christmas ornament features the God, Country, Notre Dame memorial door that is located on the east entrance of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. This annual collectible is produced in striking three-dimensional detail, crafted in brass, and accented with genuine wood doors. The finish is plated in 24K gold with the year engraved on the back. Made in the United States, this year's ornament is the 15th in the series offered by the Alumni Association.
The 2009 ornament is available at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore and online through the Irish Shop at alumni.nd.edu/irishshop.

Eddy Street Commons Opens for Business
Notre Dame has never had a real “college town”—an area of shops and restaurants to which students can walk easily. But that has changed with the recent opening of the Eddy Street Commons. Award for distinguished military service, and Ronald W. Zamber, M.D. ’83 will receive the Harvey G. Foster Award for his distinguished involvement in civic initiatives—especially those involving children.

Board of Trustees Elects Father Jenkins to Second Term
The University’s Board of Trustees elected Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., to a second five-year term as president of Notre Dame, effective at the conclusion of his first term, June 30, 2010. “The vision and leadership that Father Jenkins has demonstrated in his first four years in office have been inspiring and innovative,” said Richard C. Notebaert, chairman of the University Board of Trustees. “Building upon the foundation set by his Holy Cross predecessors, he is making the aspirations of this University a reality. Braille Coin to be Used for ND-Navy Coin Toss
A 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar will be used in the official coin toss for the Notre Dame-Navy football game on Saturday, Nov. 7. Marc Maurer ’74, president of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), will bring the coin to campus personally. Maurer is the Alumni Association’s 2009 Rev. John Cavanaugh, C.S.C. Ryan Hall: History in the Making
Ryan Hall, the new women’s residence hall located north of the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, and south of Welsh Family Hall, welcomed its first residents in August (view the video).
