Join Habitat for Humanity For a Week of Service

By Marcela Berrios, Hannah Storm Journalism Intern

About 80 percent of Notre Dame students participate in community service projects during their years at the University – and that tradition doesn’t end with graduation. In February, alumni can lend a helping hand to rebuild the gulf coast region with Habitat for Humanity and the Alumni Association.

Join fellow ND graduates from Feb. 11-16, 2008, as they travel to East Biloxi on the Mississippi gulf coast to help rebuild the Katrina-torn region.

Following an orientation session on Monday, volunteers will work on a construction site from Tuesday through Friday, hammering, sawing and painting new homes. No experience is necessary, as instructions will be provided at the orientation.

During the project, volunteers can lodge at the Habitat Village in Yankie Stadium, where the Salvation Army provides cabin-like “bunkhouses.” Each bunkhouse has its own bathroom, shower and air-conditioning/heating system. In addition to accommodations, the Salvation Army will provide and three meals a day at a total cost of $100 for the week.

Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation while in Mississippi, as well as travel arrangements to East Biloxi. (The closest airport is Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, Miss. New Orleans is approximately an hour and a half away.)

All volunteers must be 16-years-old or older, and those under the age of 18 must meet specific requirements (click here for additional details).
