Are there forgotten sacraments? This question was posed by an attendee at the Center for Liturgy conference two years ago. She was pointing out that there seem to be many conferences on the sacraments of Initiation and the Eucharist, but very few on what she called the “forgotten sacraments”—Healing and Communion.
In response to this observation, the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy will investigate the sacraments of Healing (Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation) and the sacraments at the service of Communion (Marriage and Holy Orders) at its 36th annual conference, which will be held June 16-18, 2008.
Keynote speaker Joyce Ann Zimmerman, C.Pp.S., Ph.D., S.T.D., director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry in Dayton, Ohio, will connect these four sacraments to the Paschal Mystery.
Four plenary sessions will deal with each sacrament in turn:
- Rev. John Kasza, from the Archdiocese of Detroit and assistant professor of liturgy and sacramental theology at Sacred Heart Seminary, will speak on Anointing of the Sick, which was the topic of his dissertation at Sant'Anselmo
- Deacon James Keating, director of theological formation at the Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University, will speak on Reconciliation
- Julie Hanlon Rubio, associate professor of theology at St. Louis University and author of A Christian Theology of Marriage and Parenting will address this dimension of marriage
- Rev. Robert Barron, professor of systematic theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary, will speak on Holy Orders
In addition, there are breakout sessions designed to consider pastoral questions surrounding the celebration of these sacraments in the parish.
The conference is not just for liturgists, but for everyone who wants to think about the liturgy’s relationship to life and the church. The cost is $205 for those who register prior to May 16. After that date, the cost is $225. All are invited to attend.
