Discover the Aegean Odyssey

Join ND Professor Robert (Bob) Schmuhl on the privately chartered yacht Sea Cloud and sail an “Aegean Odyssey” through Turkey and the Greek Isles in June. During the cruise, you will discover sites of major importance to Christianity, including many that are difficult to access by land.

Your journey begins in Istanbul on June 20, with three days of special visits including the treasures of Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque with its stunning interior and the exquisite mosaics of the Byzantine Church of the Savior in Chora.

From Istanbul, you set sail across the Sea of Marmara, cruising the Dardanelles, the strait that separates Europe and Asia. Entering the Aegean, Sea Cloud stops at the tiny island of Delos, one of the most important archeological sites in Greece, and anchors in the spectacular bay of Santorini, where you will tour the excavations at ancient Akrotiri and enjoy a stroll in the whitewashed cliff-top villages of this volcanic island.

Explore the ancient cities of Priene, Miletus and Didyma. At the site of ancient Ephesus, visit the theater where Saint Paul preached, and enjoy a private dinner under the stars at the magnificent Library of Celsus, with a program of music by a quartet from the Izmir Symphony.

Bob Schmuhl is the Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce Chair in American Studies and Journalism and director of the John W. Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy. He has lectured widely throughout the US as well as in Europe, Australia, Africa and South America, and was appointed to the Institutions of Democracy Commission on the Press, established in 2003 by the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands.
