The 2008 Excellence in Teaching conference will take place Oct. 17-19 on campus. This year’s keynote speaker will be Chauncey Veatch, who was named National Teacher of the Year during a White House Rose Garden ceremony in April.
Highlights of the event will include the workshop “Learning with Thinking in Mind: Developing Critical Thinking Skills.” Additionally, participants will learn how to teach their students metacognition skills, which helps students develop their awareness of the thinking patterns they use to learn.
As part of the program, Ann Anzalone, a professor at Wright State University with more than 25 years of experience working with K-12 teachers, will lead a series of workshops that address the challenges teachers face in the classroom, helping to deepen their understanding of the teaching craft.
The Alumni Association currently is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Educator Award, which will be presented at the conference. Created by the Alumni Association in 1996 to honor a Notre Dame graduate in elementary or secondary education, this award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves in educating students.
