Post-Modern Chile—Church and State

March 27–April 4, 2009
Santiago de Chile is a booming, modern metropolis with extensive suburban developments, dozens of thriving shopping malls, impressive high-rise architecture, and a modern transportation infrastructure. Historically conservative in its Catholic traditions, you will find a rich culture of traditional neighborhoods and homes, the largest Neoclassical construction in Colonial America, the historic Plaza de Armas, and more. Beyond Santiago, you will travel to the historic port city of Valparaíso, visit Isla Negra, and explore a 17th-century hacienda with strong Jesuit roots. Together we’ll see how the Catholic Church has weathered the modernization of Chile and what the future implications are for the Catholic Church in Latin America; how the Catholic Church interacts with the local state authorities and the role the church plays in such relationships. We end with a journey to Chile’s scenic wine country for a farewell lunch at the historic Santa Rita winery.
