What some people don't realize is that the term 'service' covers a broad range of activities. Don't let notions of what true service is or is not limit you from connecting with others in your community! Remember that above all people will remember how you treated them.
Schools:
1. Attend a sports game for a local Catholic or ACE school as a group! Cheer loudly!
2. Purchase extra school supplies when they are on sale and donate to a "pack-a-backpack" program serving low-income kids in your community.
3. Adopt the library at a local school or a specific classroom and find ways to contribute useful books or supplies. Recycling unused items from around the house is also "green!"
Environment:
1. Host a technology waste drive and spread awareness about recycling e-waste appropriately.
2. Adopt a park, street, neighborhood and get to work! Pick up trash, recycle plastics, cans and glass, plant greenery!
3. "Green" your next club get-together. Invite members to bring their own mugs, plates and silverware.
Health:
1. Sponsor a blood drive or attend one as a group. Make sure juice and cookies are part of the plan.
2. Sponsor a bone marrow donor registration drive. DKMS donates kits (usually $65) for free! Request more information at their website: www.dkmsamericas.org
3. Attend a CPR/First Aid training session as a group.
4. Collect old eye glasses and donate them to the appropriate agencies. (Lion's Club and Lenscrafters collect them.)
Poverty:
1. Collect non-perishables for your local food bank. Visit neighbors in small groups to ask for extra items. If you advertise your drive, use the Alumni Association's slogan "One Can Make a Difference."
Community:
1. "Bring a party" to a local nursing home. Bake (or buy) cookies and visit with residents for an hour. Coordinate with staff at the facility (most have activity directors).
2. Get crafty and knit or crochet Comfort Shawls for the sick or elderly. Email kzakas@nd.edu for instructions.
