"This Basilica . . . reminds us how important it is to pray together to implore the gift of unity, that unity for which St. Peter and St. Paul spent their lives.”

 – Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI announced the start of a special jubilee year on June 28, 2008 in honor of one of history’s most worldly saints: St. Paul. This commemorative year marks the 2,000th anniversary of the saint’s birth. Pope Benedict invited Christians worldwide to travel in the way St. Paul did, and join in religious celebrations of unity and camaraderie. The Alumni Association is proud to offer numerous travel programs with such a faithful flare as that of our church’s own beloved Paul. Join the Travelin’ Irish on our enriching programs, from the Legacy of Pope John Paul II, to the Lourdes & Shrines of France. In July, we cap-off the honorary year with the World and Times of St. Paul, led by Notre Dame’s own Dean of Graduate Studies Greg Sterling. Get ready for your own celebration of life and spirit with Notre Dame Alumni Travel.

WORLD & TIMES OF ST. PAUL, July 11-18, 2009
Truly follow in the footsteps of St. Paul as we sail the Mediterranean like the avid seaman once did. On The World and Times of St. Paul, explore the culture of this unique area, where some of the first seeds of Christianity were planted. See the rock of Athens, where Paul gave a sailing oratory of an “Unknown God.” Cruise to Thessaloniki and Philippi, where we are greeted with some of the world’s oldest basilicas and churches. At Ephesus, wander the ancient amphitheater where Paul spoke, and sail on to Rhodes to hear the famed tale of St. Paul’s shipwreck. Join Dean Greg Sterling for a spiritual voyage deep into the center of Christianity and the life of our beloved St. Paul.

LOURDES & SHRINES OF FRANCE, June 7-17, 2009
Travel with us to France this June, on a spiritual journey to a place that could not be a better fit for the Travelin’ Irish. Gaze upon the breathtaking architecture of the Notre Dame Cathedral. At Lourdes, have a moment to reflect on awesome sights at the original Grotto, a destination of one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages. Join us for an evening rosary and candlelight procession.  Explore the numerous other sights offered on the
Lourdes and Shrines of France tour at our website, and join our lecturer Edward O’Connor, C.S.C., to the spiritual heart of Notre Dame.
THE LEGACY OF POPE JOHN PAUL II, July 11-18, 2009
We invite you to the enriching exploration of the life of our beloved Pope John Paul II, led by host and lecturer Rev. John Conley, C.S.C. The Travelin’ Irish embark for Poland on the
Legacy of Pope John Paul II tour. Pope John Paul shined light on the Catholic message in the most trying of times. He was truly electric unlike any man to come before him. In Poland, visit the Warsaw and Auschwitz Ghettos. See the famed Shrine of the Black Madonna, an image of devotion he held close to his heart. Walk in his footsteps at his childhood home, and join us as we celebrate his life by doing what he did best: travel with a spiritual zest and a message of unity.
POST-MODERN CHILE, March 27 – April 4, 2009
The Notre Dame family is proud to introduce a new Alumni Study Abroad Program. With an emphasis on spiritual growth and unity, the
Post-Modern Chile program is crafted by Notre Dame faculty to provide an in-depth educational component. This program offers interaction with local Notre Dame graduates, as well as with church and political figures. Join Rev. Robert Pelton, C.S.C., in enriching discussion. Our topic: the Church’s role in a modernizing Chile. “The special contribution of this educational tour to Chile will be the opportunity to meet first hand persons who have contributed to bringing about dramatic changes in Church and State in that key Andean country,” said Fr. Pelton, “You are welcome aboard!”
