Helpful Travel Tips:
To help beat jetlag, avoid eating large quantities of fatty foods. Instead, eat low-fat foods along with plenty of fruit and vegetables to keep your metabolic rate high. Start focusing on this diet a few days before your departure to allow your body to adjust comfortably.
To ensure that your travel documents are in tow, always scan the documents and send an e-mail to yourself before heading to the airport. This is an invaluable trick to make sure you always have your passport and tickets on hand. If you ever lose your documents, you can simply find the nearest computer with Internet access to retrieve them.
If you are traveling by air, try to stay awake when the plane is taking off and landing. Falling asleep can make it difficult to adjust to pressure changes. Pack some extra chewing gum in your carryon, or just keep yawning to prevent your ears from popping.
It is important to remember that every country has different laws and regulations. Before traveling to your foreign destination, take some time to quickly review the laws that are important to your location. The U.S. Department of State’s website offers a quick and easy link to assist you in your research.

Mt. Kilimanjaro and Beyond Sept. 6-15, 2008
This fall, join Notre Dame on an incredible journey to the summit of Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will be inspired by the mystic towers of Kilimanjaro that rise from the fertile grounds of Tanzania and reach for the glowing sun of east Africa. Mt. Kilimanjaro remains a natural marvel as the world’s highest mountain that can be climbed by tourists with little or no mountain climbing experience. The journey will be paced to assist in acclimatizing properly to the high altitudes, but participants should be in good physical condition as this adventure is highly active and requires strength and endurance. We know you will enjoy this exciting challenge as you climb the remote Rongai route under the expert guidance of Andy Nachman ’97 of Northwest Voyageurs and his team of professional mountain guides.
After spending six days and five nights on Kilimanjaro, take advantage of the optional six-day safari to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to witness the spectacular wildlife and scenery of Tanzania’s wildlife parks. You’ll have the chance to see lions, cheetah, elephants, rhino, leopards and so much more as you journey through a land full of natural beauty.
“...A lovely experience of camaraderie with fellow hikers and helpful support people, the physical beauty of the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and the rewards of stamina. Northwest Voyageurs worked very well with extremely competent and dependable local guides and travel providers.” Rev. Paul Kollman, C.S.C.

A Community Service Adventure in Costa Rica
In August, consider taking your family on a trip that allows you to participate in unique volunteer programs while immersing yourself in the culture and beauty of Costa Rica. From August 9 - 19, 2008, you can stay with a host family in Costa Rica while participating in a variety of unique environmental and social volunteer projects. Living with a host family is important as it provides the full immersion experience. The host families have been carefully screened to support you as you work to improve your language skills and make new friends. The volunteer projects are all designed to be learning experiences. At the Asís Wild Animal Rescue Center, for example, you can familiarize yourself with a variety of species that call Project Asís their temporary home. There, you can help feed the animals, build and clean cages and assist in basic veterinary activities. At Amureci, a rural women’s association, you can help in recycling projects, and making handycraft and jewelry. At the Eternal Rain Forest, you can assist with the maintenance of trails and participate in environmental classes. The social volunteer programs also include working with a school, a church, and an orphanage. In Costa Rica, you can study Spanish in the beautiful, natural setting of a private tropical reserve at the edge of the rain forest. While you study Spanish, your children will be enrolled in Spanish and environmental education programs specifically designed for them. The cost of this 10-day trip is $1,495 per adult, and $1,295 for children under 10, plus airfare. The host family provides three healthy meals a day, laundry service, private bedroom and shared bathroom.
