Travel on this journey into the wilds of Tanzania where vast herds of elephant, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and Cape buffalo roam the savannas, followed by the magnificent carnivores that prey on them—lion, cheetah, and leopard. Rivaling the grandeur of Tanzania’s wildlife is the panoramic sweep of its scenery. In the north, the snow-crowned summit of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s loftiest peak, towers majestically above the plains while the expansive grasslands of the Serengeti offer unrestricted vistas in every direction. Throughout your safari adventure, enjoy accommodations in some of the region’s finest lodges; mingle with Masai tribesmen and local schoolchildren; and learn about Tanzania’s wildlife and environment from our highly qualified naturalist-guide who will accompany you on game drives and other excursions. Complement your Tanzania program by extending your African experience with a Zanzibar post-program option.

Lecturer: Rev. Patrick Gaffney, C.S.C. ‘69, ‘73 MA
Father Pat Gaffney has his primary appointment in Notre Dame’s Department of Anthropology, but is also a Faculty Fellow in the Kroc Institute of International Peace Studies and is currently the director of the College Seminar Program in the College of Arts and Letters. Specializing in issues of religion and society, he has done extensive research in parts of Africa and Asia, with a focus on Islamic movements, ethnic and cultural conflict, and religious nationalism. Lately, Father Gaffney has turned his attention farther east, and he recently spent a year studying in Russia. Contemporary developments in the great civilizations on the far eastern shores of the Pacific Rim, most notably Japan, also exercise a mighty fascination on his interest as these peoples and their governments attempt to balance cherished traditions with ultra-modern realities.
