Grand Tour of Egypt

February 1-12, 2010
Explore one of the world’s most fascinating countries, Egypt—its people, politics, and past. Look at 5,000 years of civilization, first in Cairo with visits to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, then Alexandria—founded in 331 BC and a major center of commerce and science in the Hellenistic world. Travel to Sakkara to see the oldest of all pyramids before flying up the Nile Valley to Luxor and the stunning monuments of Luxor and Karnak. Board a deluxe river ship for a three-night cruise on the Nile to the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Edfu, and a look at life along the sandy shores of this life-giving river. A very special part of this program will be overnights in Aswan and a flight to see the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel to learn about the modern feat of engineering that built the Aswan Dam and moved these temples piece-by-piece to higher ground as the waters behind the dam rose.

Lecturer: Rev. Christopher Cox, C.S.C. ‘92, ‘98 MDiv
Father Christopher Cox graduated from the Program of Liberal Studies in 1992 and earned a master of divinity from the University of Notre Dame in 1998. Ordained in 1999, Father Cox still considers himself a “baby” priest. He is pastor of both St. Adalbert Parish and St. Casimir Parish in South Bend, Ind., as well as guiding an exemplary inner-city Catholic school. Fluent in Spanish, Father Cox regularly celebrates Mass in English, Spanish, and a “mediocre” Polish. Previously, he was an associate pastor at St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, Ariz., and also taught in Santiago, Chile, during his time in the seminary. A pastor to immigrant communities, Father Cox enjoys learning about cultures. He has been published on Andean cultures and is well-regarded in understanding the migrant experience. In 2000, Father Cox delighted in traveling with Notre Dame to the Amazon River and eagerly looks forward to his next journey.
