Lecturer: Jan Hagens  

Jan Hagens teaches German language, literature, and film at the University of Notre Dame. Prof. Hagens also serves as associate director of Notre Dame’s College Seminar Program, for which he teaches courses on “Faust” and on “Forgiveness and Reconciliation.” He grew up in Germany, then studied at the University of Tübingen, Williams College, the University of Virginia, and Princeton University, and taught at Carleton College and Eckerd College, before joining Notre Dame in 1997. Prof. Hagens has won fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Templeton Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Max Kade Foundation, and the Erasmus Institute. In 2007, he won Notre Dame’s first Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. His wife, Jennifer Herdt, teaches in Notre Dame’s Department of Theology. They have two small children, Cora and Adam. Many of Jan’s family members and closest friends live along the river Rhine, in Strasbourg (his favorite town), Darmstadt, Wiesbaden, Koblenz, and Cologne.
