Lecturer: Thomas Noble
Thomas Noble, a graduate of Ohio University and Michigan State, is a historian of the ancient and medieval worlds. A dedicated teacher and winner of the Edmund P. Joyce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate teaching, Noble has long taught general courses as well as specialized offerings on the Mediterranean world, the Roman Empire, and the Age of Charlemagne. He has written several books, most recently “Images, Iconoclasm, and the Carolingians” and has co-authored two textbooks, “Western Civilization” and “The Western Humanities.” An elected Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and of the International Society for the Latin Middle Ages, Noble has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, Clare Hall (Cambridge), the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. After directing Notre Dame’s world-famous Medieval Institute from 2000 to 2008, Noble took over as chair of the history department in 2008. Noble has lived and traveled widely in the European and Mediterranean worlds and accompanied a Notre Dame alumni group to Rome in 2008.
