August 2010
Welcome to the home of the Travelin’ Irish!
We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer! Notre Dame is beautiful this time of year – we are enjoying these sunshine-filled days but also eagerly anticipating a winning season of Irish Football this fall! I wanted to take a moment to invite you to join me for the Travelin’ Irish Home Field Advantage Program for the Michigan Game, September 10-12. This will be a wonderful weekend together with your fellow travelers! The program includes 2 Nights Accommodations at the Hyatt Place Mishawaka, a private reception Friday evening, transportation to the Pep Rally and Saturday’s Game, a Game ticket, and a private tailgate. It is going to be a lot of fun and I hope you can join us! We have just 25 spots on the program and expect them to go quickly, so reserve today! As you may know, Karen Anthony retired in January of 2010 and I was lucky enough to be chosen as her replacement this past May 2010. After a visit to her new winter home in Arizona, Karen came back to South Bend this summer and was kind enough to show me the ropes and share her experiences with the Travelin’ Irish. With each new day I find more reasons to love my job! I am delighted that Karen has agreed to remain a member of our Travel Advisory Committee as well as host a tour this upcoming January 2011, Samba Rhythms. We still have some availability if you are interested in joining Karen, her husband Tony, and our other 56 alumni signed up for the cruise. It is going to be a wonderful trip - at the perfect time of year for us here in the Midwest!
In March 2011, you will find us in Rome with Barbara Mangione on our “An Insider’s Perspective Rome” trip. You may know Barbara for her many years teaching Spanish and Italian in the Romance Languages department at Notre Dame. Barbara will share a close-up view of the of the Eternal City with specially arranged tours including a visit to the little-known world beneath the city revealing a fourth-century church, the Catacombs of San Callisto and the funerary tunnels of Rome’s earliest Christians. Not to worry, there will still be plenty of time to “mangia bene” as we plan to visit some of Rome’s best trattorias.
I received a phone call today from a dear friend of Chuck Lennon and member of the class of 1960 who asked me about the Waterways of Holland and Belgium trip this coming April 2011 which inspired me to mention it in this note. We sent two groups on the tour in April 2010 and they came back with tales of beautiful views aboard the intimate M.S. Amadolce, one of the newest and most state-of-the-art vessels cruising Europe’s waterways. This private canal cruise features a visit to the magnificent Keukenhof Gardens of Holland, known as the “Greatest Flower Show on Earth” as well as a visit to Bruges. Professor Tom Swartz and his wife Jeanne Jourdan ’75 JD host this not-to-be-missed exclusive adventure.
These are just a few of the over 30 trips we will take together this year. See a comprehensive list in the Trips section of our web-site. Of course, you are always welcome to call us in the Notre Dame Alumni Association Travel Office at (800) 634-2631.
I wish you a wonderful August and breath-taking journeys in the upcoming year!
