Discussing Religion and Literature
   Religion and Literature is Notre Dames scholarly journal that provides a forum for discussion of the relationship between the religious impulse and the literary forms of any era, place, or language.
   First published in 1984, the journal has featured the works of M.H. Abrams, Gerald Bruns, Lawrence Buell, Denis Donaghue, Terry Eagleton, Geoffrey Hartman, John Milbank, Annemarie Schimmel, Regina Schwartz and others. 
   Each year, R&L publishes a special issue dedicated to a specific theme or area. The next three volumes will include special issues on Political Theology in the Renaissance, Ecotheology and Literature and Ralph Waldo Emerson and Religion. R&L also sponsors and publishes the annual Religion and Literature lecture at Notre Dame.

Give ND Students a Break
   When ND students get busy studying for final exams in December, give them a break - a pizza break delivered right to their residence hall. With the help of Study Break, a new ND Club initiative, the Alumni Association will order and deliver pizzas to students in their dorms before final exams (Dec. 2-18). [Full Story]

2008 ND Forum Topic Announced
   Charting a Sustainable Energy Future will be the topic of the 2008 Notre Dame Forum, President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., announced to the university community.
   In an e-mail to students, faculty and staff, Father Jenkins said the topic implicates a host of timely and difficult issues, including climate change and the condition of the environment, the costs and benefits of economic development, the fairness of wealth and income distribution, and the appropriate roles of nations and individuals in creating a sustainable energy future.
   Frank Incropera, professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering and former dean of the College of Engineering, will be chairman of the Forum organizing committee. Other members of the committee will be announced soon, Father Jenkins said.
   Announcement of the 2008 Forum topic came just a week after the 2007 Forum, the third annual one, which focused on the issue of immigration. Speakers at that forum included Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona, Mayor Louis Barletta of Hazleton, Pa., and Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles. It was moderated by Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for PBS's The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
   Since our first Notre Dame Forum three years ago, Father Jenkins said, these events have brought to our campus some of the most important figures in their fields of expertise and activity - religion, global health and immigration - and have become highlights of our academic year. We expect that next year's Forum will do and be no less.

Alumnus Bill Shaw Announces $5 Million Challenge Gift
Are you up for a challenge?
   Alumnus and Notre Dame Trustee Bill Shaw 67 has announced a $5 million challenge gift to encourage alumni, parents and friends to become supporters of Notre Dame. Simply make a gift to the University from now through June 30, 2008, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,500. 
   Only donors who did not make a gift to Notre Dame in fiscal year 2007 (July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007) and have not yet made a gift in fiscal year 2008 are eligible for the match. 
   Alumni, parents, and friends may view their giving history by registering and logging on to Irish Online.

Supporting.nd.edu Takes the Gold 
   The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has named the Notre Dame Development website a gold-medal winner in the 2007 Pride of CASE V District Awards program. Supporting.nd.edu was introduced in November of 2006 to highlight the generosity and impact of Notre Dame alumni, parents, and friends, and to offer would-be donors a simple, convenient way to make a gift online. 
   Pride of CASE V recognizes the industry's best work in communications, development, and alumni relations among colleges and universities in the Great Lakes region of the United States.

Think of it as MySpace with an Irish twist! 
   Only logged-in authenticated alumni of Notre Dame can view your personal page; it is not accessible by the public. You can also search for the personal web pages of your friends and classmates while logged in to Irish Online.

Pray at Notre Dame Wherever you Are
   People around the world can visit the Grotto, thanks to the website pray.nd.edu. Launched earlier this year, pray.nd.edu is a sacred place for liturgical and Gospel readings. The site encourages users to submit prayer requests, and every week, representatives from the Alumni Association light a special green candle at the Grotto on their behalf. 
   To date, pray.nd.edu has received more than 50,000 hits since launching last February.
