The trophies that Notre Dame and some of its biggest football rivals exchange every year after their annual matchup have found a new home. These trophies, which represent decades of Notre Dame football and some of the most storied rivalries in the sport, will be displayed in a special case at the west entrance of the Eck Visitors Center on years when Notre Dame wins those games.

Five of Notre Dame’s most famous rivalries—USC, Purdue, Michigan State, Boston College and Stanford—have their own trophy, which the winner of the annual matchup keeps until the two teams meet again. The five trophies are:

Jeweled Shillelagh (USC)
The winner of the annual Notre Dame-USC game holds on for a year to the jeweled shillelagh, which is a Gaelic war club. According to one legend, the emerald- and ruby-studded shillelagh was flown from Ireland by Howard Hughes’ pilot. An emerald shamrock is added to the trophy after every Notre Dame victory, and a ruby Trojan head after a USC win. The original shillelagh, which was introduced in 1952 to commemorate the rivalry that began in 1926, was retired in 1995 and is on permanent display at Notre Dame’s Sports Heritage Hall at the Joyce Center arena. A new shillelagh was introduced during the 1996 season.

Shillelagh (Purdue)
Notre Dame and the Boilermakers also battle for a shillelagh trophy brought in from Ireland. This one was donated in 1957 by a merchant seaman who was also a Notre Dame fan.

Megaphone (MSU)
Since 1949, the winner of the annual Notre Dame-Michigan State matchup receives a megaphone trophy, sponsored jointly by the Detroit alumni clubs of the two schools. Half of the megaphone is painted blue (with a gold ND monogram) while the other half is white (with a green MSU). The dates and scores of each matchup were inscribed on the trophy and when there was no room left for more inscriptions, a second megaphone, and later a third one, were bought. The winner of the annual matchup holds on to all three trophies until the following year’s game.

Legends trophy (Stanford)
This trophy, introduced in 1989 by the Notre Dame Club of the San Francisco Bay Area, is a combination of Irish crystal and California redwood.

Leahy Bowl (Boston College)
The Frank Leahy Memorial Bowl is a crystal trophy placed on a wooden base and is presented by the Notre Dame Club of Boston to the winner of that year’s Notre Dame-Boston College match. It’s named after the legendary coach that served both schools. Frank Leahy led the Eagles in 1939 and 1940 before returning to his alma mater and coaching the Irish to four national championships in 11 seasons. The Notre Dame Student Government has also created a rivalry trophy, the Ireland Trophy, to pass between the students of both schools and encourage a spirit of sportsmanship and friendly competition.
